With many township residents feeling the squeeze of tight economic times, South Brunswick High School is helping young ladies dress to impress for upcoming formal events. SBHS will sponsor the Viking Closet prom event on Thursday (March 29), where about 400 dresses will be given away to any young woman in need of a prom, formal, or sweet 16 dress.
"These are tough times for everybody feeling the affect of the economy, so this is the perfect opportunity for kids whose parents may not be able to afford a dress," said SBHS staff member Jennifer Webb, who coordinated the event. "This is a very good year to give away free dresses. We're excited about how many came in. There are so many beautiful gowns and short dresses, so there's a little bit of everything."
The giveaway was originally planned for less fortunate students, but after a huge number of dresses were donated, Webb said the organizers decided to open it up for all students.
"There were so many dresses donated, so there might be some freshmen and sophomores who may not be going to proms, but could have a sweet 16 coming up where they can come in and get a dress," she said. "So instead of this just being for 11th and 12th graders, we decided to open it up to the entire school."
Webb praised the donation of racks by Stein Mart for helping the dress giveaway happen. All unused dresses will be donated to the charity One Simple Wish in Trenton. There will also be a chance for one student to win a free dress from Gucci.
The Viking Closet event is scheduled for Thursday (March 29), from 2:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the faculty dining room.
"Any student in South Brunswick who hasn't heard about this should come in with an open mind," Webb said. "There are so many dresses to choose from, so you can leave here with a beautiful dress for a prom, formal, or sweet 16 and be a happy camper. Plus you get a chance to win a free Gucci dress, so you can't beat that."
