Stephen Gambrel's first restaurant design.. Cole's NYC

Stephen Gambrel has ventured into commercial design with Cole's Resturaunt in Greenwich Village, NYC and I love the outcome photographed here by Adrian Wilson.  The Grey and yellow make a wonderful statement in the space along with the vintage mix.

Their site discribes it best:  Inspired by the artistic scene of 1950’s Greenwich Village, Steven Gambrel designed the 94-seat space to evoke the decade that earned the neighborhood the romantic reputation it has to this day. Each one of the intimate rooms has its own distinct feel, incorporating retro and contemporary design elements. Burlap panels in the Dining Room are the backdrop for the art provided by charity partner ACRIA (AIDS Community Research Initiative of America) as well as pieces from Swet’s own collection, ranging from ’50s-era sketches to ’90s street art. The Café, situated between The Bottle Room and the Dining Room, is lined with wooden plank booths ideal for groups while The Bottle Room offers seating at the bar and high tables, and is lined with amber-toned panels reminiscent of the warm hues emanated from light hitting a whiskey bottle.

Finished up...

When you work on a project for years it is so nice to finally have it wrap up.  It makes all the difference to see all of the decisions and hard work come together to make a space that you are really happy with.  Design is a collaboration between the designer, architect, builder, tradesmen and the client and when everyone is happy it is one of the best feelings you can have.  This is a little peek at a project that just finished up last month and we could not be happier with the results.  It feels so good to see it in use and working so well for everyone.

tolix in the kitchen

I love tolix as I am sure if you have read the blog for a while you should know.  I have 3 stools as my new island, they are the natural finish, and they are the best!  These in yellow are so fun in this otherwise simple and clean kitchen.  They give it that little something that makes the space special.

mellow yellow

Sometimes all you need is a little touch of color to make you smile..  What are your plans for the weekend?  I am going to try and get into my copy of The Great Gatsby this weekend, of course it is not vintage and covered in yellow but I am sure that the story is still just as good!
 Enjoy your Friday my friends!

Finishing up..

Above is a grouping of fabrics and finishes that represent the way I typically start a project.  From here I will pull photos and ideas to see which direction to take it.  Once I have that done (sometimes it is the hardest part to find an image that conveys what I want the space to say) I work on the furniture layout and then onto the furnishings themselves.  The final step in my designing process is to put the fabrics and finishes on the proper pieces.  It takes a while to get from design to the finished product, but it is really nice to get there!

This project actually has a few more rooms but I did not like the way my photos looked so I had a limited selection!  If anyone knows of a good commercial photographer in Northern California I would love a good recommendation.

On a totally separate note my friend Molly Wood is having a One Kings Lane sale starting this morning!  Stop by and check out her goodies!

Bits of Yellow...

Just so fun how that little bit of color makes everything so interesting.  Sometimes I think that yellow gets overlooked in design.  It makes such a great contrast here....

Yellow and grey with some detail

I always love the clean look of the interior on old homes. And I simply adore the dresser with the painted leaves and flowers!

Kelly Hoppen - London Calling

Kelly's Georgian townhouse in London is an amazing view into her design style. I just love her! Modern, clean and classic. Not too over the top and a splash of color. This home is the second that she has completely remodeled and designed for herself. Which I think every designer really needs to do - that way you can buy all of the great things that maybe your client wouldn't let you have (you know that there is always something!)
