Vintage Fabrics: Batik

I have a little problem when it comes to this indigo fabric.. well I just cannot resist the beautiful details of each piece and how different they are.  (Please excuse the weird angle of the photo below).   I love these pieces with their intricate patterns and the soft hand of the fabric. The fabric pieces were made in China with a wax resist technique and each is unique, most of these pieces began as clothing and bedding and are now being re-purposed in all different ways.

As you can see I cannot resist the temptation with these pieces! Some of these will go up for sale, most are my personal collection, and I will be using some of the loose fabrics for upholstery projects that I have in the works.

While we were in LA for this quick little visit it was a beautiful day and the neighborhood was so pretty, so I snapped a few pictures.  I love how each house is so unique and full of character, this one was so cute!

happy weekend...

Thank goodness we are onto the weekend again.  Although there does not seem to be an end in site for our busy fall season I do have hope that our home will soon be back to normal.  Things are moving along well in the kitchen and the flooring is completely in.  We just have painting to go and  a few little things here and there.

How are things shaping up for you this fall?  Does it seem that there is not a dull moment in any season as of late?  I feel like we are all go go go around here.

The china cabinet

I spent most of the day yesterday trying to empty out my china cabinet and get ready for our new wood flooring to be installed and I started thinking about how lucky I am.  I have waited 4 years for the flooring I wanted, after pulling up some damaged wood when we first moved in, I am excited.  But I was really thinking more about all of the wonderful pieces I have accumulated over the years.  I LOVE dishes and when I was on a trip to Paris about four or five years ago, I found out how very much fun it could be to buy beautiful pieces while I was there and bring them home with me.  I fell hard for Astier de Villatte and my life has never been the same.  Each trip I have taken I have bought pieces and brought them home with me, very carefully.  I have a large collection now and although I don't use it as I should, each piece seems to hold a wonderful memory for me.  There are many other beautiful pieces in there too but each of these is like a little treasure to me.

As I have been going through emptying out our kitchen and now the china cabinet I have realized something else too, I need to buy only what I love, not what is a good deal or something I may never use.  I have donated boxes and boxes of pieces over the last few weeks that have never been used or were still in the original packaging.  So this project or combination of projects has given me the jump start I need to spend more wisely and maybe just maybe start using those beautiful pieces I have been sheltering from my loved ones for fear of breakage.

Do you use what you have?  Do you save the best dishes and glassware for only special occasions or do you use them everyday?

Wing chair before and after..

It has been a while since I have had these back and I have been so bad about taking pictures of them.  I am so happy with the way they turned out and I think that they will just get better and better as I wash them and have them tighten up a bit.

Another busy week this week and I am looking forward to completing a few things around here and moving along with the bathroom.  I have been reading and trying to rest up enough so that I can get some things taken care of.

Another project that I have been working on for a little while installed a few weeks back.. I love love the way the banquettes turned out with the metal tables...  It was a very fun space, I cannot wait for the TV's to get in to see it in full effect!

Sleeping in and thank you...

A little sleepy this morning...  wishing that my bed looked like this though...

I want to say thank you again for all of your lovely comments about our dining room.  I am in the process of putting it all back together this weekend and then next week maybe something for that wall.  It seems so naked without the mirrors.  I will test the clock theory but I am not sure that it will stand out with enough contrast for me.  I am considering putting something like this in there since I already have them (but if someone buys them then I can get my new chandelier!!!) and  I would have to change out some other pieces if I did that.  I am sure I won't be able to wait long as I get a little impatient sometimes and I want to have it semi together before a dinner we are hosting on the 14th of November!  I will keep you up to date though.  Have a wonderful weekend and a very spooky Halloween!

Dining room changes...

Here is my dining room as it is now... With dark brown paint and the mirror collage. I am not in love. We have an ugly ceiling fan that was existing and most of the furniture was new. I had the drapery made and put in just after we moved in a couple of years ago. I have been dying to change this room for a while now but have been kind of undecided on what exactly to do. (I have had a square of Slate Grey from Restoration Hardware painted on the wall for 3 months or so waiting for my husband to give in.)

So we will paint and I have decided to sell the mirrors to make way for a large reproduction clock face with zinc. I am so excited! I am hoping that the grey on grey will work for the space. I would really love to have some mirrored window panes here - but a clock face will do nicely for now.  I am going to recover the chair seats too once the painting is done.  I found a great settee at the Long Beach Flea Market a few months back that I was thinking of putting in here but it is too low so I have another location planned for that.

The floor will remain unfinished concrete as I am still deciding if we should stain it or just wait for the wood flooring I liked to be within my budget.

I have decided to go ahead with the Slate paint from Restoration Hardware- I love the dark contrast with the white trim. As we progress I will have to give you an update...

(I know I never did do an update on the front door project- they look amazing- I will have to take some pictures and post them.)

What do you think?

Please come in and stay awhile...

So we are in great need of repainting our front doors.  I would love to have a custom set made with glass insets and a wonderful handset.  But alas this is not to be.  So we are taking what we have and making it cooler.  These are my inspiration photos, many I took while in Boston a while back, I love doors!!  Anyway, I am leaning towards a simple handset like the one pictured below with my exterior accent paint color Sherwin Williams Black Fox.  It is not quite black but more of a grey brown- the best color I have found and I love love it!  What do you think?  We have stacked stone on the front with a lot of grey in it and I think it will work well to have something striking and simple there.  I will be adding Wisteria to the front for a little romance (I just thought of this last night).  I would love your opinion!
